Onion Price: Learn how much onion prices after export duty

The Government of India has announced that it will abolish 20% of onions from April 1. The Revenue Department of the Ministry of Finance has issued a notification for the decision. The main objective of this export duty is to ensure the availability of onion in the domestic market. Apart from this, onion exporters and farmers will benefit from this decision.

Export duty and change

Earlier 20% of export applies to onions, as well as minimum export price (MEP) and 8 December 2023 to 3 May 2024. Its aim is to control onion prices in the domestic market and ensure its appropriate availability. However, now the government has decided to abolish this 20% export duty, which will come into effect from 1 April 2025. It is expected to improve the conditions for exporters and farmers.

Export and prices fluctuates

India, the main manufacturer of the onion and exporting country, exported 17.17 lakh MT (LMT) onion in fiscal year 2023-24, and in 2024-25, the number is expected to reach 11.65 LMT. There are many ups and downs in onion exports. In September 2024, onion monthly export was 0.72 LMT, which increased to 1.85 LM in January 2025. This export is increased after the removal of tariffs, which are likely to benefit farmers.

The government’s goal is to balance the interests of farmers and consumers. The government tries to give the farmer a fair price for their products, as well as ensuring that onion prices will not bear the general public.

Declining onion prices

Onion prices have declined due to the introduction of the new rabi season. Although prices in Mandi are still high compared to the previous year, the average model of all-India weight has fallen at 39% onion prices and 10% of retail prices.

Prices have fallen due to the increase in onion arrival in the market. In the main Mandis of Maharashtra, onions like Lasalgaon and Pimmplegaon have grown. On 21 March 2025, onion’s model price was recorded at Rs 1330 per quintal in Lasalgaon and Rs 1325 per quintal in Pimplegaon.

This year’s onion’s record product

Rabi onions are expected to be a record high in India this time. According to the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, this year’s rabi onions are estimated to be 227 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), 18% more than 192 lakh metric tonnes. This product is 70-75%of the total onion supply of India. With this product, the market is stable until the kharif crop in October-November.

The decision was taken when the country faced low onion production and high prices in the international market since August 2023 last year. Now the good product of the rabi crop is stable and relieved in onion prices.
