Union Minister Shivraj met Prime Minister of Nepal and discussed the strengthening of cooperation in agriculture
Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma met Oli in Kathmandu on Wednesday. Shivraj Singh also attended bilateral meetings with Nepal and Bhutan’s agriculture and cattle ministers. In addition, Shivraj Singh Bimstek also met the general secretary of the third Bimstek Minister on agriculture. Union Minister and Prime Minister Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli confirmed the intimate and friendly relations between India and Nepal and discussed ways to further strengthen Indo-Nepal cooperation in agriculture.
The two leaders felt that the new signed MOU would open the way to increase cooperation between the two countries in agriculture and its affiliated areas. Shivraj Singh reiterated India’s commitment to support Nepal in agriculture and allied sectors by establishing a fertilizer plant in Nepal in Chitwat. Both sides have spoken on market access issues.
Discussion on issues for mutual benefit
At a bilateral meeting in Kathmandu with the power of the Agriculture and Livestock Development Minister Ramnath with the power of Nepal and Bhutan, the ministers reviewed the bilateral cooperation in the agriculture sector and discussed ways to further enhance the mutual benefit of the two countries.
A memorandum has been signed on cooperation between the Governments of India and the Nepal governments on cooperation in agriculture. MOU will replace the signed memorandum between the two countries on 6 December 1991. This mou crop productivity, management, agricultural research and efficiency building, market access, agricultural trade and weather -friendly and sustainable agriculture gives new speed.
Discussions on Institutional Cooperation in India
The two sides discussed the cooperation between the Joint Agricultural Work Group (Jag) and the cooperation between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Nepal Agricultural Research (NRAD) under the New MOU. Both ministers reviewed the progress of India’s proposal for the establishment of agricultural-industrial gardens in Chitwan.
Ministers have also reviewed the progress of agricultural projects under India’s High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) program in Nepal. He discussed the cooperation of the cattle sector on both sides and the institutional cooperation between the agricultural institutions of the two countries.
Meeting with Bhutan
Union Agriculture Minister Chauhan Bhutan held a bilateral meeting with agriculture and livestock minister Leonpo Enten Fanthasho, in which ministers reviewed bilateral cooperation in agriculture, cattle and allies. This includes focusing on areas such as irrigation development and mega forms. Ministers also discussed the signature of the MOU on technical cooperation between the two countries. Shivraj Singh has emphasized India’s commitment to maintain India’s relations with Bhutan. The Bhutani team requested the Indian team to increase its funds for the Bhutan program and mentioned the lack of resources.
Shivraj met Bimstek General Secretary
Shivraj Singh Bimstek General Secretary Indrama Pandey met Indrama Pandey during a third Bimstek minister’s meeting on agriculture in Katmundu and discussed the cooperatives between the India and the Bimstek Forum in the agriculture sector. The minister said that Bimstek countries face partnership challenges such as climate change, lack of resources and food security and nutrition issues, which requires learning from regional cooperation and one’s experiences. He said that BIMSTEC countries need to work together to successfully implement the BIMSTEC action plan of 2023-2027, which was collectively received at the 5th Bimstek Summit in 2023.
