The crowds in Delhi’s prisons have become a serious problem. Currently, about 19,000 inmates have been closed against 10,000 prisoners in 16 prisons in the capital. This is the situation where more than 1,000 coastal prisoners were released by 2023.
During the assembly session, the Delhi government submitted a comprehensive report on the situation of prisons, in which the number of prisoners in Tihar, Mandoli and Rohini prisons was worried. In some prisons, the prisoners are five times more than the ability.
Most prisoners Tihar Prison

The number of prisoners in Delhi’s prisons is eight times more than the convicted inmates. By the end of 2024, there were 17,118 coastal prisoners and only 2,235 people attended the criminal. This number has been on the rise in the past five years.
The safety of the prisons was tightened
In view of the number of prisoners, the prison administration and security measures have increased. The three-tower-compatible call barrier system (D-HCPS) and an organization in Mantoli Prison have been established in Tihar. 15 mobile jams have been installed in Tihar.
A total of 7,549 CCTV cameras have been installed in Delhi’s prisons, resulting in 2 cameras in every 5 prisoners. 15 deep search metal detectors, 610 body cameras and 23 X -ray luggage scanners are installed. CRPF, ITPP and Tamil Nadu Special Police have been halted to prevent violence in prisons.
Plan to create new prisons
Narela and Pabrala are planned to build new prison complexes in Delhi. The project will be allocated 40 acres of land in the first phase of the DDA, with a high security gel with a capacity of 256 prisoners. Increased Budget: The largest increase in costs
With the number of prisoners, the cost of prison administration is also increasing. The budget of prisons in 2019-20 is Rs 490 crore. In 2023-24, it increased to Rs 595 crore.
