Health is the basic human right. As it has been defined for years by the World Health Organization, health is not defined only in the absence of disease, but in a more universal way, with the welfare of the population. Their basic determinants are related to living conditions, poverty, inequality, the effect of climate change, and access to good health care. The uneven society is necessarily a sick society. World Health Day enhances the need for a common effort between governments and health professionals and the general public, long lifelong and quality, and the absence of disease is vulnerable to prevention and living with the utmost welfare.
Global topics and influence
Every year, which defines a major theme for the World Health Day campaign, addressing emerging or continuous problems affecting global health. Some topics are already made include depression, diabetes, infectious diseases, mental health, food safety and comprehensive health coverage. The topic that was chosen for 2025 is: “A health beginners, a future full of hope.” The goal is the campaign that focuses on the health of the mother and the two children, with the purpose of ending the maternal deaths that prevent them and give priority to the health and well -being of women in the long run.
These topics reflect the current challenges and push political and social changes. Governments and organizations benefit from the date of launching awareness campaigns, promoting vaccines and other preventive health measures, and encouraging and discussing measures to enhance health systems.
Women and Children’s Health – reflected in indicators such as the rates of Caesarean section, newborn deaths, vaccination, coverage and access to primary health care – distinguishing the development of societies and must be given priority through any political campaign and government performance.
Challenges and progress in the field of health
Despite progress in medicine, technology and vaccine development, many challenges still have to be faced. In different parts of the world, especially in the poorest regions, millions of people are still suffering from a lack of basic medical care, outbreaks of infectious diseases, and high child death rates. In Portugal, the health of the mother and the child was a news about the news, especially with regard to urgent care, but it is necessary to think more at the global level, and to identify new variables such as migration and policy development to integrate inequality and combat.
The role of society and governments
Health promotion is not only the responsibility of professionals in this field and scientific societies, but also for governments and society itself. Effective public policies, such as investing in hospitals, distributing medicines and health education, is essential to ensure access to good care and quality.
World Health Day is a moment of reflection on health achievements and challenges. It reminds us of the need for a global, effective and global health system. History enhances the importance of prevention, structural investment and infrastructure, and health professionals’ evaluation, especially education and health promotion programs.
More than a simple celebration, April 7 is a memory for all of us, and of course, from scientific societies. The Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine has a deep awareness of health and disease problems, with regular sites, opinions, support and support for all organizations working on health policy, with special interest in forming internal doctors, but also in contributing to medical literacy for the public population. Only an enlightened community is able to properly options. This is also our mission.
