The right to prevent: struggle for vaccination against the region
The aging of the population puts us before an unprecedented dilemma. While we celebrate the achievement of a longer life -fortunately, we face the challenge of ensuring that the additional years of life live in full. April 18: European Day of satisfactory rights.

It is not enough to live more, it is also necessary to live better, a model that requires a balance between promoting luxury and the quality of life and managing the financial impact that this aging translates into health systems. Looking at this scenario, the most prominent of prevention goes, as successful revenues have already been confirmed at all levels: with the consequences of the disease, it avoids the expenses involved in their treatment.
Zoster, known as the region, explains this problem completely. This disease, caused by the virus that, in childhood, causes waterproofing, and returns to appear after decades, which affects one in three people who exceed 50 years and a special effect on people of any age suffering from diseases that affect the immune system. And with the effect that can be devastating: in addition to a special rash, it can cause pain, the most common complications, which may last for months until years, or complications in vision, heart attacks and blood vessels, as well as hospital.
A trail of fears that do not wander, with economic effects. The burden, as many studies emphasize, are important and direct of health systems, which bear great costs in treatments that only reduce symptoms, without attacking the cause, but also on the patient’s work and productivity days and the career of his care, and we are talking about a delusional disease.
The data that we have, in reference to the national reality, reveals the concern dimension of this problem: between July 2023 and June 2024 they were diagnosed and needed health care 62,985 adults with a region, a disease of its annual estimated cost of 10.2 million euros, including direct costs (7.2 million euros) and others for the national economy (2.4 million euros).
The most concerned here is that there is prevention of the region, which was achieved through vaccination, which has been scientifically proven – a study published in the New England magazine confirmed that vaccination in the elderly is 97 % effective in reducing the risk of the disease. Looking at this guide, it will make sense to assume that this issue is not saturated. But the reality indicates that this is not the case in Portugal, where the vaccine exists, but it is only available to some, which creates a variation in reaching prevention that contradicts the basic principles of our health system.
This is because, contrary to what is already present in many European countries that were part of this vaccine in the national fortification program or, instead, they pay their acquisition, here there is no or another, which represents a barrier in front of most citizens. There, the direct direct costs of the vaccine make a privilege that can only be reached for the economically favorite minority.
In the name of the state’s resource savings, the right to prevent, which is as a result of which … has more costs for this same condition. The paradox that represents a failure to protect public health. We provide today to spend more tomorrow, a basic economic or humanitarian account.
