Lula Garcia preachers to restore abandoned homes instead of occupying more soil
Fuerteventura Cabildo leads a comprehensive strategy to rehabilitate “shells” and avoid more soil occupation
Cabildo de FuerteveNtura, Lola García, has announced a firm commitment to a sustainable development model that gives priority to restore abandoned housing and incomplete construction-known as “Cascarones”-at the front of the new soil occupation. A strategy that responds to the increasing demand for housing solutions on the island and commitment to environmental protection.
Garcia said: “Fuerteventura cannot continue to grow at the expense of its territory. We have many deserted properties, in urban lands, which deteriorate or half, which can recover to meet the real demand for housing.” In this regard, the head of the island stressed that “development must be planned to think about those who live on the island and not on the basis of speculation interests.”
In this way, Cabildo started a comprehensive strategy, after it has already requested, in writing, for all the municipality of detailed reports on the legal status of these characteristics, in order to prepare a strict diagnosis.
With this information, the procedures will be coordinated with the Canary Islands government to facilitate the final recovery of these spaces, either through agreements with owners, public acquisitions or legal formulas that allow them to do so.
“We want to give a real answer to the citizen’s request for a long time. These spaces cannot continue to be a symbol of abandonment,” the president said.
This initiative was frame in the rehabilitation -based housing policy, the effective use of land and urban sustainability, in line with the island model that was adapted to Fuentora’s characteristics. In addition, Cabildo will provide municipal technical support to prepare reports and drive a road map that allows these spaces to be returned to general use.
“The goal is clear: to respond to the needs of the population that lives in Fuintura, without strengthening speculation or creating an effect called. We bet on a more housing, coherent and respectable island with its lands,” and Garcia concluded.
