Dispinse is not education, sir
In the latest edition of the Aveiro Municipal Association, the mayor, Ribau Esteves, had a new opportunity to go to future generations. It will be the perfect time to inspire and inform the seeds of critical thinking and release them with the young young man. Unfortunately, what was seen was exactly the opposite: a deviant discourse, loaded with overwhelming and old myths about the national and international energy system.

In an attempt to politically benefit from a blackout in the national electrical system, the president decided to direct his finger at the end of coal vehicles in Portugal. He did this with the lightness of those who did not carefully study this topic. Coal centers have not been closed by “political whims”, but because they are no longer economically viable. Electricity production has become coal, in addition to being very contaminated, simply expensive and dough in the face of cheaper alternatives such as wind, solar energy, or even natural gas. Even if they are at work, they will not avoid obfuscating these centers at the time of failure. Therefore, the summons of its closure as the cause of the accident is technically and political opportunistic.
Ribau Esteves also pointed out that “China is building 200 coal centers”, which easily ignores that it will work mainly as a strategic reserve to cover peak, not as a basis for energy consumption. What he did not say also – maybe it was “forgotten” – is that China was so much that the country that has invested the most renewed energy in the past decade. In fact, it has invested more than ten times the value of Europe. The Asian country builds the largest solar storage and production system on this planet. This appears to be not appropriate for the speech intended for Aveiro children.
In fact, President Ripao’s environmental history speaks of himself. For 12 years in the office, sustainable energy stakes in the municipality are limited to exposed investments, which are always associated with community funds: electrical ferry, some electrical templates and the renovation of the bus fleet. They are worthy initiatives, but they are completely insufficient. Instead of leading a strong municipal plan to move to energy, the executive has chosen specific solutions, which is very good for photography, but it is unable to change the energy model in the city that is still old and few for the future.
The most serious is to use the municipal assembly session for youth – a space that must enhance critical thinking and democratic culture – to distort the facts before the public, by definition, is still in training. It is unacceptable.
Perhaps it was useful to explain to the youth why, even with all investments in this announced education, Dr. Jaemy Majelis Lima Secondary School recently recorded the worst results in the region in the national arrangement. Perhaps it was more educationally facing data instead of hiding failures with energy popularity.
The truth, sir, is that the luminous does not lead. With the climatic and social challenges we face, Aveiro needs leaders who know how to distinguish between small conversation and dangerous policy. Because education explains, not deception.
