The bike is freedom, health, economy and well -being. For those who ride, it is a practical and economic way to move, enhance a healthier lifestyle and help reduce daily expenses. For society, it translates into better quality cities, less carbon emissions, lower noise, greater safety, and a more general and better space to enjoy all people.
But the effect of the bike goes further: it is a tool for autonomy, inclusion and social cohesion
Allowing children to be able to travel alone, safely, for school, activities or friends, is necessary to develop them and their well -being. Today, this freedom is committed by the cities that focus on the car. The opposite of this trend is possible, necessary and urgent.
The bike is also a social cohesion tool. It contributes to the approach between people, encourages local trade, revives public spaces and enhances relations in societies. While the speeches of intolerance and exclusion grow, active movement is also a way to address this social fragmentation and enhance coexistence, sympathy and democracy.
We ask to take political measures as a result
For this, it is necessary to be our cities and our villages safe for walking and bike. This requires transformations in the public space – such as the redistribution of the road area and speed limits of 30 km/hour in the regions – in addition to effective and effective education and supervision procedures with car drivers.
Also, it is indispensable to invest in the programs of changing the culture of movement, from school to public to public to stimulate new habits and a more sustainable vision of transportation.
MUBI calls on the new government, from the legislative elections on May 18, to advance without further delay with the implementation of the National Trade Activist Mobility Strategy 2020-2030, and to benefit from the national road safety strategy-vision zero 2030, with an effective action and appropriate financing plan.
The municipal elections for this year also represent a decisive opportunity for the Portuguese municipalities to adopt a new model in urban policies and transportation, which gives priority to active media and public transport through the car. Citizens need more green cities, affordable, and canable.
Moreover, it is necessary for political decision -making makers and public bodies to lead, for example, and to adopt and enhance the most sustainable transportation patterns. Change begins with those who have strength, responsibility for inspiration and conversion.
The change is within our reach
On this International Cycling Day, the Moby calls on the entire society – citizens, companies, institutions and governments – to recognize and assume bicycle capabilities as part of the solution to the most housing and comprehensive human cities.
Everyone can be part of this change. Choose the bike, on foot or public transport, whenever possible, supports public policies that give priority to active movement and require concrete measures for local and patriotic actors who include collective defenders for active movement-direct ways to contribute to the safest, healthy and more fair societies. The change is within our reach.
