Dairy sector from India-Yuke FTA deal, a wave of happiness among small businesses and peasants
In the FTA agreement between India and Britain, tariff exemption on many agricultural products has been declared. These products include tea, spices, food items and sea products. This will benefit India’s exporters and also benefit the farmer. Local industries and farmers are happy to exclude the dairy sector from the FTA deal. That is, the tariff on dairy products cannot be killed.
India’s dairy sector is the largest in the world, which gives 25 % of the world production. Despite such a huge production capacity, India’s sector is excluded from all FTA duty in the world. The dairy sector has also been kept away from the FTA as there is the highest dependence of small farmers.
Dairy will benefit small farmers
Small farmers and cattle breeders from rural areas raise animals and raise their family expenses. The livestock business is very convenient for them because they can make good profits at low cost. If the milk production is brought to the FTA, the inflation of milk production increases, the demand and supply equation will be disturbed, which affects the demand for milk production. The biggest damage to small farmers in the country and the world.
RS Sodhi, president of the Indian Dairy Association, said that the unnecessary dairy sector should not be dragged into the FTA as it has achieved good and steady growth in the last few decades. They say that the dairy sector should not be seen from a business perspective, as about 10 crore small farmers are connected to its affiliated sector. To protect the interests of small farmers, the Government of India is the reason for keeping the dairy, apples and chees away from any fee concession.
Growing dairy business in India
Today, more than eight crores of farmers in the country are employed directly by joining the dairy sector. India today contributes to the world’s milk production today. Milk production has increased by about 52 percent in the last 10 years. In 2014-15, milk production was 14.6 million tonnes, increased to 24 million tonnes in 2023-24.
