AdvertisementThe United Kingdom has signed an agreement to convert the controversial Sagos Islands to Mauritius, and the Westminster says that the deal is protecting the future from a US military base and the UK for British security.
The Sakos Islands, the largest island, and Diego Carcia in the Indian Ocean, are the main navy and air bases used by the United States.
Under the contract, the United Kingdom leases 120 million euros per year at least 99 years.
Prime Minister Cairy Stremer said that this base is “based on our internal security” and is important to the struggle against terrorism and information services.
“When we come to this agreement in our terms, we ensure strong protection against evil implications, which will allow the site to work in the next century, which helps us to keep us safe for the coming generations,” Starmer said at a military headquarters near London.
Critics argue that the allocation of islands that have been the British territory for more than 200 years can lead to intervention of countries like Russia or China.
British Opposition Leader Chemical Padenoch argued: “We should not pay the British territory to Mauryas.”
The deal faced opposition from the island’s former residents, which had been evacuated for decades to construct the site. Starmer and Chairman Morrisiano Naveen Ramkulam must have signed a virtual ceremony on Thursday morning. It was postponed when a judge issued a precautionary measure before two natural women from Sagos.
The injunction was later raised by another judge.
