Pan’s memories: Casa Laura had a tradition for nearly six decades
Raimundo Antonio Veloso knows every inch of the store he has held for almost 60 years. Casa Laura, Boulevard Castleho in France is a traditional point of sale of pots and household goods, which is more than a business: part of the living history of the Belem Shopping Center.
“I have been working here for 14 years,” Raimondo recalled. “I met all the Portuguese and Italians here at the time. All this was different.”
He said he started an employee in the supermarket in the vicinity of Old City until he purchased his own commercial point.
Trade, according to Raimundo, is alive due to the honesty and effort of previous generations. “People who work here are honest people. The Portuguese are working very hard,” he recalled.

Despite the years of resistance, the challenges have intensified in recent times, especially with the arrival of online stores. “These Chinese come here and spoil the movement. They sell the original. They are bucket 100 liters and only 90!”, Criticism, weeping in a competition.

“I am working here 22 years ago. She left us a grocery store inherited, and I and another boy who were 40 years old here we follow the tradition,” said cladneer.
He believes that the longevity of the business is due to the bonding of entrepreneurs and faithful customers. “There have been people who have been buying here for decades. They are parents, then children, and granddaughters now. It has stood up to us.”
To continue in the market, he also had to adopt. “We are changing the goods. We are adjusting what we sell. We always try to keep the shop active. The secret is to resist and re -innovate,” he said.
Reliability in response to modernity
When shopping malls multiplies and gaining online sales strength, the resistance of Belem’s traditional bases is personal relations, the confidence that has been built over the years, and the effective memory of human service valuable clients and as always in the same place.
Between the busy sidewalks and the historical structure, these stores are more than trading: they are living the Maros of the Belenence Identity, and they continue to resist the tasks they do.
