Para | UN approves the Brazilian Continental Shelf expansion with the right to search in the economy

By the United Nations (UN), by Continental Platform Commission (CLPC) approved a request from Brazil to expand its intercontinental shelf on the northern coast. The platform is in line with the submerged area beyond the continental territory. Information from G1 Sao Paulo.
The new area, which spread between the states of Aamapa and Rio Grande Do Norte, exceeded the limit of 200 nautical miles (about 370 km) from a special economic zone, where Brazil already has international rights.

The decision, released on Wednesday (26), assures Brazil to explore an extension of about 360,000 km in comparison with the German territory. With this approval, the newly created area is able to obtain natural resources from underground and sea bed.
Navy: Strategic Conquest
In an official statement, the Brazilian Navy stressed that this identity represents the most important strategic and geographical political success of the country. Since 2017, Brazil wants to expand its intercontinental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles established by international standards. Seven years of negotiations between Brazilian experts and CLPC members in the analysis process.
A favorable decision came after the Brazilian delegation submitted its final observations during the 63rd Commission session in New York between February 17 and 28. The study of the Equaterial Margin was held under the Brazilian Continental Platform Survey Plan (Leplock), led by the Navy and supported companies like Petrobras and National Agency, Natural Gas.
Oil exploration
Despite the UN approval, the new recognized area does not meet the area that seek power for petrobras oil drilling. Although both are in the equator margin, the state’s interest is already focused on the Brazilian area, with 200 nautical miles limit.

The first oil well intended to explore petrobras is in the FZ-M-59 block, FOZ DO in the Amazonas Basin, Aguas Do Amapa. With regard to environmental requirements, the state -owner company has informed the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), which ends the Faona Stabilization unit in Oiapok (AP) until March, and plans an already required survey.
The Federal government has been pressured to release the environment license. President Louiz Inacio Lula Da Silva and Mines and Energy Minister Alexander Silvira criticized the delay of Ibama. In February, Silvira said that Lula’s delay was classified as “Lenga-Lenga”, while Argon’s president Rodrigo Agostinho was afraid to make the decision and be without courage.
