Panasonic S1R II Review: The cheapest fantastic hybrid camera than opponents

Further, it is better, which makes the maximum dynamic range with no crop or a 4K video up to 120 FPS. Some of these resolutions, especially 5.9K60 FPS and 4K120 FPS modes, are 1.1x and 1.04x respectively. 4K120 FPS also uses pixel binning, losing resolution and introducing other artifacts such as rainbow-colored moir.

It takes us to the main trouble: the rolling shutter. The S1R II is actually slightly better than S5 II in that regard, 25 millisecons at 1/40 per second or full sensor readout reservations (8K or 5.8K). Panasonic’s Dynamic Range Expansion (DRE) is a problem, which increases the video dynamic range through the stop, mostly in the highlights of the image. Starting that feature has worsened the rolling shutter.

If you need to reduce the rolling shutter, you can disable the DRE without a big hit in quality. And at 60p reduces a 4K shooting rolling shutter so that it is similar to stacked sensor cameras, while at the same time provides high-quality footage with a slight crop.

When it comes to video quality, it is the razor sharp and the color composition is perfect and pleasant. When shooting with Panasonic’s V-Log I had a dynamic range at the high end of the cameras close to 14 stops, which allows it to highlight excellent shade and highlight recovery, especially in Dre Mode. It is still very good without a dre, especially if you don’t shoot in bright and sunny conditions.

The video AF is also strong, and even focusing on moving things quickly. The face, eye, animal and vehicle identification works well, however, again, the system is not as reliable as I have seen in the latest models of Sony and Canon.

S1R II offers more stabilization options than its opponents. Optical stabilization provides good results for the handheld video, but electronic stabilization (EIS) makes things more sensitive. Cranking it until the most aggressive high EIS setting provides a gimbal -like sensitivity, but introduces a significant 1.5x crop.

In addition to them, the Panasonic is called “cropless” EIS. That setting takes advantage of unused areas of the setting sensor, to correct the corner distortion with wide angle lenses. I found that reducing the rolling shutter for quick pans and walks is very well done, which helps to reduce such problems for some creators.

So, Yes, a rolling shutter web is worse on this camera than opponents like R5 II. However, there are ways to work around it. Do not buy S1R II if the minimum distortion is a critical feature, but it should not be a problem for many users, especially at this price.
