Nasik’s onion will reach the Middle East markets without intermediaries, farmers have become exporters!
Farmers who cultivate onion in Nashik, Maharashtra are very upset with the prices that are constantly falling. At the same time, a section of these farmers has now started exporting the onion crop directly. Nashik farmers have brought out a new item of onion exports. For the first time, local farmers sent the first commodity of 30 tonnes of their products without direct partnership with the Middle East.
No more tension of profit
The Indian Express Indian Express quotes the top companies built by 2,000 tonnes of onions (FPC) in the state, saying that 2,000 tonnes of onions will be exported directly to the Gulf without intermediaries or traders participating this season. This means that farmers get better returns and in the partnership of traders, exporters or commission agents they do not have to face less profit problems.
New opportunities for farmers
Eknath Sunap, a farmer from Nigaon village in Papi Taluk, said, “This has brought new opportunities to the farmers and the markets of exports will ensure better returns for us.” The distant dream is because of access to farmers and export markets such as Sunap, who are directors of Goda Picket Farmer Producer (FPC). Also, new opportunities will ensure that farmers adopt better farming practices to develop better quality onions.
Proper grading facility is also required
To qualify for export, the size of the bulbs should be 55 mm -60 mm and they get a good price. ‘Export requires a better quality product and proper grading facility. It helps us for a long time. Grading means how the product is separated according to size. In Naigaon, it was possible to reach export markets for farmers who produce companies in domestic markets.
The first opportunity to export directly
MahafPC Managing Director Yogesh Thorat said, ‘Nashik, Dharashiv, Ahiliyanagar and Pune districts are participating in 10 FPC exports. This is the first time we have been exporting directly. According to market experts, traders, exporters and commission agents usually buy onions from wholesale markets. Then before sending goods to foreign markets from Mumbai, they graded and regulated them. By intervention, the aim of Mahafpi is to make the prices of peasant prices be increased properly to convert FPC into exporters.
Thorat said, ‘The intermediaries are few, which is good for farmers. We have created a storage facility of 19,000 tonnes in our series and our goal is to help them (FPC) export centers. The purpose of this process is to train farmers to develop the necessary skills for packing, pruning and grading for export markets.
Mango will also be exported soon
According to the Thorat, they also plan to grow it to vegetables and fruits. In addition to the onion this season, 2,500 dozen mango runs will be exported in the Mahafpi Middle East markets, he said. The Indian onion has a stable market in the Middle East countries, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh has now banned Indian onion imports till June.
