Basmati Rice: Now ‘Basmati War,’ exported king Indo-Pakistan becomes Haryana!

After Operation Sindoor, India and Pakistan are now preparing for ‘Operation Basmati’. In the coming weeks, this direction between the two neighbors may be very tough and more competitive for the basmati rice. Some people in the industry call it a ‘basmati war’. Haryana and Punjab are very important in the two states in India when it comes to export of Basmati Rice. The land of the two states is very beneficial to cultivate this type.
Million tons of exports each year
According to the newspaper The Tribune report, both Haryana and Punjab contributed to 80 percent of India’s basmati exports. This includes 40 % of Haryana. Most of this cooperation comes from GT Road belt. About 100 exports earn 18,000 to 20,000 crore foreign currency from exports every year. These exports play a major role in rice exports.
The newspaper quoted former President of All India Rice Expert Federation (AirE) Vijay Setia, saying that after the recent tension, India is in good condition to increase its share in the world market. He said that India and Pakistan are the main suppliers of the Gulf countries like Iran, Iraq, Oman, Bahrain, UAE and Kuwait.
Challenge before Pakistan
Settia said India had removed the Indus water agreement and that Pakistan had a big challenge. In Pakistan, high water consumption crops such as basmati and non -basmati rice are severely affected. But it will be diverted to water resources to Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan farmers for domestic agriculture. However, the Settia policy has also warned about domestic obstacles.
New opportunities for Indian exporters
He said the minimum export price (MEP) was a setback for Indian exporters last year. Pakistan unknowingly got an edge. Due to the best quality basmati production in India, we need to maintain our lead in the global market. At the same time, in many countries, the aggressive diplomatic access to India, which has a delegation of MPs in many countries, plays a very important role. According to Settia, these representatives are highlighting the role of Pakistan in terrorism. This strong diplomacy affects the Pakistan economy, which can create new opportunities for Indian rice exporters.
How much Pakistan is exported
According to Irea President Satish Goyal, India has been an extraordinary success in paddy exports. “India has exported more than 60 lakh tonnes of basmati in the last fiscal year, which is the highest so far. In the year 2023-24, we hit the number of 5.2 lakh tonnes. This year, we hope to break all of the previous records. Pakistan exports are 1 lakh tonnes, he said.
Haryana, popularly known for its high quality products and strong supply chains, is an important contribution to it. Sushil Jain, president of the Haryana Rice Export Committee, said the same. He said Pakistan’s rice production could be reduced as the water agreement ended. It directly affects their exports. This gives Indian exporters a strategic lead, especially Haryana exporters.
