After four years of renewal work, Bolhão reopens its doors in September 2022; It has been renewed from scratch, and it is now at the forefront of health and hygiene standards.

“The renewal of Bolhão was a process supported by the city. It was a complex and difficult task, but the citizens wanted to do it.”

The renewal cost 28 million euros, of which 22 million were funded by the European Union, and 6 million public funds, partially national and regional.

“The relationship between the customer and the seller is much more and closer,” Francisca Kareniro Fernandez concludes. “Often we see these women teach customers to cook their products, which helps to understand the history of the city and the Portuguese lifestyle. The social and cultural value is very important for this market.”

Several sacrifices were made, but they deserved it; The market is still a decisive knot for the city’s economy, and it is also the cradle of its cultural identity.
