Lemon farmers have demanded Vietnam in Puliaangudi, Tamil Nadu
As soon as you enter Puliaangudi, Tamil Nadu, the fresh scent of lemon welcome you. Lemon is planted here in over 5000 acres of land. The glittering green and yellow lemon knows around the world. You may not know that the lemon here has a GI tag. Tenkasi district is located at the West Ghat and more than 1500 farmers from more than 20 villages are engaged in lemon cultivation. The farmers told the government that they had provided the Cold Storage facilities in Vietnam and they need the same facilities.
Businessmen get a lot of advantage
Due to the favorable weather conditions of Puliaangudi, lemon is full of growing citric acid and aromatic. Farmers said it was a pride to get the GI tag for Puliaangudi lemon, but these tags were still not beneficial. Without proper marketing, those who grow and sell, buying at a cheaper price are very low. Of course, only traders will benefit the most.

According to the ETV report, traders usually sell Rs. Farmers say there is no processing unit and a factory. The government should do anything about this. According to producers, they are mostly affected by this. Farmers have been seeking cold storage facilities for years. Since the lemon tree takes seven years to plant fruit. In such a situation, many problems arise. Sometimes the care of trees is a challenge and sometimes there will be an attack on wild animals.
Tons of lemon sold every day
The market will also open until 11 am and in such a situation, farmers have to face more problems. In the market yard, the lemon business grows rapidly from the farmer and then to the businessman. Buyers from Kerala, Karnataka are more than local people. According to traders, Kerala is a big buyer of production and he prefers fruits more than Tamil Nadu. A businessman said he would business 250 tonnes of lemon daily. But this year’s demand has somehow reduced but the crop is good.

The state deteriorates after the epidemic
Kovid -19 was all fine and exported lemon to abroad for that time. But now the situation is not so encouraging. Another businessman said the government would provide cold storage to lemon storage in Vietnam. It helps to export large amounts of fruit abroad. Earlier, 10 tonnes of lemon was exported to the Maldives every day. Similarly, we export 24 tonnes of Dubai every day. But now all this has stopped.

There is no transport facility
Due to lack of adequate rail transport in the area, lemon producers cannot send their products to other states. If farmers want to carry lemon to states like Maharashtra, they must first go to Tirunelve, which is 90 km from here, and then the train. Therefore, the government needs to provide train connectivity with nearby Tenkasi and Sengottai. Puliaangudi farmers said they were still alone when their products were best. Farmers have sought the support of state and central governments for processing units, storage and better transport.
